Finding A Balance

Kjeragbolten – it is not as dangerous as it looks

How can you pull yourself up when you are feeling low? You can see the top, but how can you get there? You know from where to start, but do you feel ready?

Nature, mountains, climbing, effort, strength, mental strength, time, thoughts, feelings.

After a hike we say that we have conquered the mountain or the peak, but is that true, or have we actually conquered ourselves?

I am not an expert in this domain. Actually I have only had the opportunity to go hiking a couple of times, but every time I was amazed. What I love most about it is when you are thinking „ there is no way I can make it to the summit” and then surprise, surprise, you’ve made it, and it feels great.

Of course it is an activity that is physically challenging, but I think that at the same time your mental attitude is enormously important, if not even more so.

At that moment, when you are cold or wet, you are carrying a heavy backpack, you are tired from the many hours you have been climbing, all you can dream about is a hot meal and shower, then you have reached the point when you have to keep on going, to push yourself.

I went to Norway last year in September to visit my dear friend Iulia. We hadn’t seen each other for one year, a time in which we had both been travelling, having new experiences, far away from home. It had only been three months since I had returned from the volunteer program I took part in in Brazil. Adapting again to my city and society wasn’t easy.

I was often puzzled by people’s attitudes and behaviour – something that I had previously never questioned.

I realized how unfair this world was. Some people having everything and not realizing it, living in their own vicious circle, and then the others with nothing and appreciating every small change in their life. I began to feel guilty, that I was not doing enough, I didn’t want to mix in with society again, I was afraid I was going to lose myself.

I needed to find a balance because I was unhappy, I didn’t know where my place was.

But I found this balance in the Norwegian mountains. Together with Iulia’s team, we embarked on a 5-day road trip, hiking, sleeping in tents, ending our nights around a campfire. It was amazing.

But something happened on those mountains, being put in a position in which I had to push myself to my own limits, with no chance to turn back or give up, made me understand, offered me the balance I was looking for. I don’t know exactly how to explain it, but maybe people who have a passion for mountains will be able to understand me.

When I came back home I felt ready. Ready to start university. Ready to be part of European society but still have my own principles and ideas.
